Skin Care Routine Steps: The Right Order for Morning and Night
Cleanse, treat, moisturize, protect. Most routines are a version of those four steps, layered from the thinnest product to the thickest.

A sensible skin care routine has four steps: cleanse, treat, moisturize and, in the morning, protect with sunscreen. Apply products from the most watery to the richest so each one can reach the skin, and keep active ingredients such as retinoids and exfoliating acids for the evening. Everything else, from toners to eye creams, is optional and should earn its place.
The order at a glance
| Step | Morning | Evening | Essential? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Cleanser | Gentle wash or just water if skin is dry | Thorough wash; two rounds if wearing makeup or sunscreen | Yes |
| 2. Toner or essence | Optional | Optional | No |
| 3. Serum or treatment | Antioxidant serum such as vitamin C | Retinoid or exfoliating acid, on alternate nights | Depends on goals |
| 4. Eye product | Optional | Optional | No |
| 5. Moisturizer | Light lotion or gel | Same or slightly richer cream | Yes |
| 6. Sunscreen | Broad-spectrum, last step | Not needed | Yes |
Step by step
1. Cleanse
Cleansing removes oil, sweat and whatever the day left behind. Pick something mild that leaves skin comfortable rather than squeaky. In the evening, anyone wearing water-resistant sunscreen or makeup may like a "double cleanse": an oil or balm first to dissolve the layers, then the regular wash.
2. Tone, if you enjoy it
Old-fashioned toners were alcohol-heavy and stripping. Modern ones are closer to a watery hydrating layer. They are pleasant but not necessary, and an exfoliating toner counts as a treatment, not a toner, so it belongs in the evening slot.
3. Treat
This is where targeted ingredients go. Serums are thin, so they sit close to the skin. A few common choices:
- Vitamin C in the morning, to support skin against daily environmental stress.
- Retinoids at night, for clogged pores and texture; start twice a week.
- Salicylic or lactic acid at night, on nights you are not using a retinoid.
- Niacinamide or hyaluronic acid, which most skin tolerates morning or night.
4. Eye area
An eye cream is simply a moisturizer packaged for thinner skin. If your face cream does not sting your eyes, it can do the job. For puffiness and shadows, habits such as sleep and allergy control often matter more than any jar, as our guide on dark circles under the eyes explains.
5. Moisturize
A moisturizer locks water in and softens the dryness that treatments can cause. Oily skin may prefer a gel; dry skin, a cream. Applying it to slightly damp skin helps.
6. Protect
Sunscreen goes on last in the morning, after moisturizer has settled. Use a generous amount on the face, ears and neck, and reapply when you are outdoors for long stretches. Without this step, much of the work done by treatments is undone by daylight.
A shorter version for men
The steps are the same for every face, but a routine built around shaving can be trimmed to three:
- Wash with a gentle cleanser, ideally just before shaving so the beard is softened.
- After shaving, apply a fragrance-free moisturizer or balm instead of an alcohol-based aftershave.
- Finish with sunscreen in the morning, or choose a moisturizer that already contains it.
Men who get blackheads on the nose can add a salicylic acid product a few evenings a week, as described in our guide on how to get rid of blackheads.
Mistakes that undo good products
- Too many actives at once. Layering a retinoid, an acid and a strong vitamin C on the same night often ends in redness and peeling.
- Starting everything in one week. Add one new product, wait a couple of weeks, then add the next, so you know what helps and what irritates.
- Skipping a patch test. Try a new product on a small area, such as behind the ear or along the jaw, for a few days first.
- Treating sunscreen as summer-only. Daylight reaches skin through clouds and windows all year.
- Using more to get faster results. A pea-sized amount of retinoid covers the whole face.
Common questions
Do I need to wait between layers?
Usually not for long. Give each layer a moment to absorb so the next one does not slide around. The exception is sunscreen, which forms a better film when the moisturizer underneath has settled.
What if a product says to use it differently?
Follow the label. Some treatments are designed to go on before a cleanser or to be rinsed off, and the instructions on the pack override any general order.
Is the same routine right for the body?
The logic carries over. Gentle washing, occasional exfoliation and moisturizer solve many body skin complaints, including the dotted look covered in our piece on strawberry legs.
If your skin stings, flakes for more than a few days or reacts with a rash, stop the newest product and ask a pharmacist or dermatologist for advice.
